How to Read a Heat Sheet
A Heat Sheet (or Psych Sheet) is the master schedule of races sold at the meet or viewed on the Meet Mobile app. Here is how to read your swimmer's entry:
- Event Number: e.g., Event 12 - Girls 9-10 50 Yard Freestyle.
- Heat Number: Swimmers are grouped into heats based on entry times, from slowest to fastest.
- Lane Number: Your child's assigned lane for that specific heat (typically Lanes 1–8 or 1–10).
- Entry Time (Seed Time): The swimmer's best past time, or "NT" (No Time) if racing it for the first time.
Essential Equipment & Packing Checklist
Packing properly ensures your swimmer stays comfortable, warm, and well-fueled during long sessions.
Swimmer Gear Bag
- Team Swimsuits: 2 competition suits (one worn, one spare in case of tears).
- Swim Caps: 2 silicone or latex team caps (always keep a backup cap in the bag).
- Goggles: 2 pairs of fitted racing goggles (anti-fog, adjusted straps).
- Towels: Minimum of 2–3 large towels (or 1 chamois towel plus 2 dry towels).
- Parka / Warm-ups: Team swim parka, fleece jacket, and sweatpants for between races.
- Footwear: Deck slides, Crocs, or sandals (never barefoot on cold concourses).
- Deck Entertainment: Books, cards, tablet, or coloring books (avoid active running games).
Parent Survival Bag
- Seating: Portable folding lawn chair or padded stadium seat cushion.
- Clothing: Layered apparel (pool decks are hot and humid, outside concourses can be cool).
- High-Lighter & Sharpie: For marking event details on your swimmer's arm and tracking heat sheets.
- Portable Power Bank: Phone battery drains quickly when tracking live results.
- Cash: For admissions, printed heat sheets, and concessions.
Nutrition & Hydration Strategy
Rule of Thumb: Avoid heavy, fatty, or acidic foods during a swim meet. Stick to small, easily digestible carbohydrates every 30–45 minutes.
| Category | Recommended Items | Items to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Hydration | Water, electrolyte mix, coconut water, diluted sports drinks. | Carbonated sodas, heavy fruit juices, energy drinks. |
| Quick Energy Snacks | Bananas, applesauce pouches, pretzels, graham crackers, grapes. | Citrus fruits right before racing, candy, high-fiber snacks. |
| Protein & Recovery | String cheese, turkey roll-ups, peanut butter packets, bagels. | Heavy fast food, fried foods, dairy-heavy meals during racing. |
Swim Meet Etiquette & Survival Tips
- Always Talk to the Coach First: After every race, the swimmer should go straight to their coach for constructive feedback before coming to parents for snacks or congratulations.
- Never Flash Pictures at the Start: Flash photography is strictly prohibited at the start of a heat as it can mimic the strobe of the starter light system.
- Stay Clear of the Ready Area & Starting Blocks: Only coaches, officials, and competing swimmers are permitted on the starting bulkhead. Parents should remain in designated spectator areas.
- Volunteer: Meets rely entirely on parent volunteers. Sign up as a lane timer—it gives you the best seat in the house!
- Focus on Effort, Not Just Placement: Celebrate Personal Bests (PBs) and technique improvements over ribbon placements.
